Concert Orchestra The Concert Orchestra has been training tomorrow’s classical musicians since 1965. Now in its 46th year, The San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony Concert Orchestra has a strong reputation in our community. This exceptional ensemble includes talented young people from 7th to 12th grade. These committed musicians comprise the organization's most advanced string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players; and performs the most difficult repertoire of the five ensembles.  In 2001, the Orchestra performed a European tour,  in 2005 competed in the National Orchestra Festival in Reno, Nevada.  In honor of the Youth Symphony's 40th Anniversary Season, the Concert Orchestra performed a special benefit concert under the baton of internationally-renowned conductor and Youth Symphony alumni, Kent Nagano.  In June 2007 The Concert Orchestra toured Vancouver, British Colombia and most recently in June of 2010 they toured to San Diego and Santa Barbara. Plans are in the works for a Chicagho tour in June 2013.

Academy String Orchestra This intermediate string orchestra consists of students with three or more years experience on violin, viola, cello, or bass.  The Academy String Orchestra perform standard musical literature from Baroque through modern composers with an appreciation of musical styles for each period through sectional and full ensemble rehearsals.   Throughout the season, this dynamic ensemble rehearses in sectionals and as a full string ensemble.  Each year they perform a run-out concert for a local elementary school to inspire their peers.

Symphonic Winds The Symphonic Winds ensemble consists of intermediate woodwind and brass musicians who have two or more years' experience on their instrument.  Symphonic Winds performs challenging works for wind orchestra.  Musicians get the chance to form small jazz ensembles to perform at events.

Preparatory Strings Preparatory Strings is a string orchestra experience for musicians who have played two years or more.  It requires note reading and counting simple rhythms.  Listening and counting skills are stressed, providing a sound foundation for future string orchestra participation.  The musical literature performed at three annual concerts is classical, popular and folk.

Super Bows! Superbows is a first ensemble experience for students who have played their instruments for one year or more.  Students should be able to read notes on the A and G string and be familiar with quarter notes, eighths notes and whole notes.
